Visa4Bali – EID in Bali

Muslims in Indonesia make Eid al-Fitr their main holiday, a moment to be reunited with family.

Where Eid al-Fitr, or Eid in Indonesia, is a Muslim holiday that falls on the 1st of Shawwal on the Hijri calendar.

This moment of family gathering is usually done with the family in their hometown, so it’s no wonder that the moment of Eid al-Fitr is used as a moment to return home on a large scale, which is carried out by the Indonesian people.

But there are also some who don’t take advantage of the Eid holiday to return home. There are also those who take advantage of going on vacation with their family.

Witnessing the Muslim Eid Tradition in Bali

Even though in Bali the majority of the people adhere to Hinduism, that does not mean that Eid al-Fitr does not have traditions like those that are common in Bali. There are at least three Eid traditions in Bali, including;

Ngejot Tradition

Muslims in Indonesia have a tradition of cooking Eid special foods such as chicken curry and ketupat, which are not to be missed by Muslims on the island of Bali.

Muslims in Bali celebrate Idul Fitri by giving Eid food to neighbors around their residence. And this is what is called the “Ngejot” tradition.

The ngejot tradition is carried out by the Hindu and Muslim communities on the Island of the Gods. For Hindus, this tradition is held to celebrate Galungan Day, ahead of Nyepi, and Kuningan Day.

Whereas for Muslims, this tradition is carried out when entering Eid.

The Megibung Tradition

Megibung is a tradition of breaking the fast together. Breaking the fast in the Megibung tradition does not only mean eating together, but actually eating together on the same tray.

Megibung, or eating together on one tray, begins when the drum for breaking the fast is beaten.

The meaning of the Megibung tradition itself is about togetherness, maintaining friendship, and creating harmony between religious communities in Bali.

Pegayaman Tradition

Pegayaman is carried out routinely every year and is usually held three days before Idul Fitri arrives.

There are several stages to the series of events, including the presentation, presentation, and appearance.

These three things are the sequence of traditional processions, this activity is generally carried out by women in the village to prepare food for Eid, such as the Galungan and Kuningan traditions on the Island of the Gods.
